The Way Youth Hockey Should Be

The Way Youth Hockey Should Be

The Cranford Hockey Club (CHC) is the oldest youth hockey club in New Jersey, providing the best value in the region.  We are a non-profit, family-focused organization led by volunteers and coaches (many of whom have played competitively) driven by a love of the game.

We have the right priorities for youth hockey ... and are decidedly not a year-round club.  Like USA Hockey and experts in the field citing reams of supporting data, we believe our players should take a break during the off-season.

We believe young players should be introduced to the game in a fun and engaging environment, such as our cross-ice Mite programs implementing USA Hockey’s American Development Model, and grow and develop with an opportunity to play competitively as members of the New Jersey Youth Hockey League. Our Mission is to develop not only great hockey players, but great people of strong character who value teamwork and sportsmanship while reaching their maximum potential in a fun environment.

If you have any questions, please click here and a Board member or CHC Ambassador will be sure to reply . . or feel free to speak with anyone already in our family. Based on our end of season survey results, 98% of respondents were satisfied with their hockey season and over 95% would recommend the Cranford Hockey Club. Passion, not Profit

We are driven by passion, not profit. Unlike other area hockey clubs, we are a non-profit, doing what we do for a love of the game. We are a family, not a business. Ask yourself why another club might be encouraging you do something and the additional fees they are charging. We are focused on providing sound hockey fundamentals, a shared passion for the game, in a fun environment that will keep players coming back for more.

We charge thousands of dollars less than other programs. Other clubs are trying to generate as much revenue as possible – charging for special training sessions and camps and . . . .

In this case, the old adage of “you get what you pay for” is NOT true. You get tremendous value for your hockey dollars with the Cranford Hockey Club. Below are our fees for the 2015-16 season. Excluding Midgets, the season starts in the first week of September and goes until late March. A typical week includes being on the ice four times (two games and two practices) and any off-ice dryland training decided by the team coach. Midgets start in mid-August and finish at the start of the high school hockey season in mid-November.

Our Coaches

While our coaches bring an encouraging and positive attitude and a strong hockey-knowledge to the ice for each practice and game, the Cranford Hockey Club is a family . . and our coaches are literally that – dads who are experienced hockey players and coaches that care like no paid twenty-something can.  The entire Cranford Hockey Club environment is about teaching great hockey skills and, more importantly, teaching life lessons . . finding the right balance of motivating and nurturing from the perspective of a parent and providing advice that only a parent can truly know.

We Believe In Developing The Whole Athlete

CHC is not a year-round Club. Like USA Hockey, we believe young athletes should play other sports. It develops the whole athlete. More importantly, it avoids burn-out and keeps our players excited for the next season.

Mountains of research also conclude youngsters should play different sports:

Regional Club

You do not need to be from Cranford. We draw players regionally – from Cranford, Westfield, Scotch Plains, Fanwood, Clark, Union, Roselle Park, Linden, Summit . . actually from 36 towns!

Oldest Hockey Club

Avoid the insanity in much of youth hockey today. CHC has been around for nearly 60 years – a stable, family-focused Club with the right priorities – that will guide us for the next 60 years. We’ll be here when what is old becomes new again.

Member of New Jersey Youth Hockey League

Unlike some other area clubs, CHC is a member of the NJYHL, providing a fun, engaging and structured season with league standings and playoffs.
